Build an AI Rubric Feedback Tool in Minutes with Gemini & NotebookLM

Imagine building a custom AI mini app in minutes! An app that can grade reports and generate clear, visual feedback in seconds. It sounds futuristic, but it’s completely possible using Google’s NotebookLM and Gemini.

In this demo, I create an automated rubric feedback tool where a student or teacher can paste in a report, have it checked against a marking rubric, and instantly receive structured feedback. The feedback includes a visual rubric breakdown, a total mark, and can even be downloaded as an image.

This tool is especially useful for draft writing. Students can get fast feedback, revise their work, and resubmit with a clearer understanding of expectations. Teachers can use it as a teaching aid to visualise rubric criteria, guide class discussions, and share a consistent feedback approach with colleagues.

The workflow starts in NotebookLM, where you upload your marking rubric. Because NotebookLM only uses the sources you provide (and Google states your data isn’t used to train its AI), it’s suitable for classroom use. Clear, specific rubric descriptors lead to better feedback and AI can even help refine the rubric itself.

Next, the rubric is connected to Gemini, where Canvas is used to generate a simple web app. With the right prompt, Gemini creates a tool that compares student work against the rubric, highlights achieved criteria, calculates a score, and presents everything in clear language.

The real power is flexibility. Update the rubric in NotebookLM and ask Gemini to refresh the app. Don’t like a change? You can revert to an earlier version. Design tweaks are just as easy using Gemini’s Select and Ask feature.

This isn’t about replacing teacher judgment or automating final grades — it’s about faster feedback, clearer expectations, and better learning conversations.
