How To Create A Digital Seating Plan Using Slides

Do you want to have a seating plan that you can edit all year round? Follow this tutorial to learn how you can create your seating plan in Google Slides. You can also go straight to the free template available here to begin customising today.

Reasons for using a Seating Plan

  1. It helps you to learn students’ names. The faster you learn the names of your students, the quicker it will be to begin building rapport with them.
  2. You can optimise for your students’ learning needs. Students who require extra support should be easily accessible to you as you walk around the class.
  3. You can maxmise peer learning opportunities. As you learn who your students are you can begin to pair students who will collaborate well together.
  4. If you’ve got group seating arrangements, you can plan for your group activities more effectively by creating groups containing students with varied skill sets.

Create a new blank presentation using Google Slides.

Step 2: Design your classroom and seating plan

I like to create rounded rectangles for the title, teacher’s desk and student names. You can easily move the shape around when changing up the seating plan.

Personally, I like to have 2 versions of the seating plan (Teacher’s View and Student’s View). The teacher’s view is created first and may include assessment data and extra details about students. The student’s view is much cleaner and will just tell student’s where they are seated.
