How To Use ChatGPT In Teaching To Save Time

How can teachers use ChatGPT to increase the efficiency of their workflow? Are there simple ways you can introduce ChatGPT into your teaching practice, to save time? In this post, we’ll be looking at a range of prompts that you can use with ChatGPT that have the potential to change how you work.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence (AI) tools are transforming the landscape of education. ChatGPT is a chatbot driven by AI that has been created by Open AI. It’s able to generate new ideas in a conversation style and it’s currently free to use.

Limitations of ChatGPT

It’s important to note that ChatGPT has various limitations, as listed on their website. For instance, the chatbot can generate misinformation and/or bias information. It’s only as good as the data (currently up to 2021) that it’s accessing, hence it’s important to exercise your own judgement when choosing to use the tool. ChatGPT can be a good starting point when generating ideas, but you may need to do your own edits and adjustments to suit your needs.

10 Ways To Use ChatGPT As A Teacher

Idea #1: Ice Breaker Activity

Ice breakers are exercises that prompt students to start conversations with one another. They are generally fun activities that involve all students and can be used when students are getting to know each other or when you have spare time!

Example ChatGPT Prompt: “Create an ice breaker activity for my Year 8 maths class”

Idea #2: Revision Questions

At the end of a topic, revision questions are a great way to recap learning. To generate a range of good questions to ask students, refine your prompt to ensure ChatGPT is creating questions specific to the topic you want.

Example ChatGPT Prompt: “Create 5 review questions for the Year 7 topic of Fractions. Provide the answers as well.”

Idea #3: Multiple Choice Questions

ChatGPT is great at generating multiple choice questions as well! Perfect for a lesson starter or quiz.

Example ChatGPT Prompt: “5 MCQ on Year 8 Algebra”

Idea #4: Rubrics

Rubrics can take a long time to create. ChatGPT can create you a quick rubric, that you can then refine to suit your needs. Be specific in your prompt to improve the rubric.

Example ChatGPT Prompt: “Rubric in a table to assess “evaluate the effectiveness of anti-smoking campaigns in Australia”

Idea #5: Exemplar Text

Suppose you want your students to engage with a rubric – you can generate exemplars for students to practice assessing sample work. You may choose to change the essay or assignment question for this activity. Since ChatGPT will typically generate you a high quality response, you can refine the prompt to ask for a lower quality response.

Example ChatGPT Prompt: “In 300 words or less, evaluate the effectiveness of food safety campaigns in Australia. Generate a poor response.”

Idea #6: Lesson Plan

If you’re teaching a lesson for the first time or wanting some fresh ideas, ChatGPT can help you create a lesson plan to help you get you started.

Example ChatGPT Prompt: “Create a 50 minute lesson plan for my Year 10 Science class on the topic Combustion.”

Idea #7: List of Discussion Questions

You can generate many discussion questions in ChatGPT. This is great for group tasks. For example, you could have rotating stations, where students discuss and jot down ideas for different discussion questions at each station.

Example ChatGPT Prompt: “Create 4 discussion questions related to the topic of global warming.”

Idea #8: Stories & Scenarios

ChatGPT can create stories! You could ask the chatbot to generate scenarios that students can analyse and discuss.

Example ChatGPT Prompt: “Write a scenario on bullying.”

Idea #9: Research & Idea Generation

Don’t waste time generating ideas on your own. Use ChatGPT to help you research and get ideas quickly e.g. project ideas, lists, teaching activities etc.

Example ChatGPT Prompt: “Endangered species in South Africa.”

Idea #10: Differentiation & Personalised Activities

Ask ChatGPT for reccommendations for accomodations you can use to help facilitate different student needs.

Example ChatGPT Prompt: “Activities for teaching about volcanos to challenge a gifted student.”
